Dubai is many things. Kind to jewellery, it is not.
The heat, the humidity, the saltwater, the pool chlorine, the perfume, the sweat. Your pieces are up against a lot. The good news is that with a little bit of know-how, your jewellery stays beautiful for years. The bad news is that most people find out what not to do the hard way.
Here are expert tips from our founder, Mamta Valrani who is a certified gemologist.
Consider this your shortcut.
Why the UAE Is Harder on Jewellery Than Anywhere Else
It's not just the heat. It's the combination.
The UAE's climate means your jewellery is constantly exposed to moisture from humidity alone, before you've even thought about the pool. Add sweat, salt air, and the fact that most of us apply SPF and perfume every single morning, and you have a perfect storm for tarnishing, dulling, and in some cases, skin reactions.
Different metals behave differently in this climate. Sterling silver is reactive to sulphur compounds found in sweat and humidity. Rhodium plated brass is more resistant to tarnish thanks to the rhodium coating, but the plating can wear over time if it's not looked after. Stainless steel is the most resilient of the three. It handles heat and moisture better than most metals and is a strong choice for everyday pieces in a harsh climate.
None of this means your jewellery can't survive in the UAE summer. It absolutely can. It just needs a little more attention here than it would elsewhere.
The Golden Rules
Take it off before the pool.
Chlorine is one of the fastest ways to damage jewellery. It breaks down metal, strips plating, and can weaken settings over time. This matters especially for rhodium plated pieces, where chlorine accelerates plating wear. The same goes for the sea. Salt water is beautiful. It is not beautiful for your jewellery. Pieces off before you get in, pieces on after you've dried off.
Take it off before you spray.
Perfume and hairspray are two of the most common causes of tarnishing and plating wear that nobody talks about. The alcohol and chemicals react with metal and build up as a dull residue over time. The rule is simple: get ready first, jewellery goes on last.
Never leave it in the car.
Temperatures inside a parked car in Dubai can reach 50 degrees celsius or more. That kind of heat degrades metal, loosens settings, and for rhodium plated pieces in particular, can accelerate surface wear. If you're taking your jewellery off, it does not go in the cupholder.
Take it off before bed if you've been sweating.
This one is especially relevant in summer. Sweat contains salt and sulphur, which affect silver and can wear down rhodium plating over time. Stainless steel handles sweat better than the others, but a quick wipe before bed is still good practice across the board.
How to Store It Properly
Storage is where most people lose the battle without realising it.
Air and humidity accelerate tarnishing on silver and wear down plating on rhodium pieces. Individual pouches or a lined jewellery box with separate compartments limits air exposure and stops pieces from scratching each other.
Every Jewels Jar piece comes in its own PVC pouch. We use PVC rather than PU because it holds up better over time, especially in the UAE climate where heat and humidity break down cheaper materials faster. The pouch your piece arrives in is the easiest storage solution you already own. If you've misplaced yours, you can order replacements on Amazon.
Anti-tarnish strips are a small investment that make a real difference. Tuck one into your jewellery box and replace it every few months. They're especially useful for sterling silver pieces. If you don't want to invest in anti-tarnish strips, wrap your pieces in a soft tissue.
Keep your jewellery away from bathrooms. Daily shower humidity accelerates tarnishing faster than almost anything else in a home. A bedroom drawer beats a bathroom shelf every time.
Keep pieces separated. Different metals stored together can cause micro-scratching, and in the case of silver, contact with certain other metals can speed up tarnishing.
Sterling silver benefits from a light polish every few weeks, especially in the UAE where tarnish builds faster than usual. A double-sided polishing cloth works best. The inner layer removes tarnish and the outer layer buffs to a shine. No water, no chemicals, no risk of damage. Use gentle circular motions and you'll see the difference immediately. This one on Amazon is a good option and lasts a long time.
For rhodium plated and stainless steel pieces, a soft dry cloth is usually enough for day-to-day cleaning. Avoid abrasive cloths on plated pieces as they can wear the surface down over time.
Why Material Quality Matters Even More in the Heat
If you've ever worn cheap jewellery in Dubai summer and ended up with redness, itching, or irritation, that's not a coincidence. Heat and sweat amplify metal reactions. Nickel, found in low-quality pieces, is one of the most common contact allergens, and sweat pulls it directly into the skin.
At The Jewels Jar, all our pieces are crafted in quality metals: 925 sterling silver, rhodium plated brass, and stainless steel, chosen specifically because they're kind to skin. Our sterling silver and stainless steel pieces are hypoallergenic. Our rhodium plated pieces use both 925 sterling silver posts and pushes. Wherever the metal makes direct contact with the skin, even sensitive ears are protected.
In a climate where you're wearing jewellery in the heat almost year round, this matters.
The Short Version
The UAE is not a forgiving environment for jewellery, but it's very manageable. Take pieces off before the pool, the sea, and the spray. Store them somewhere dry and separated. Clean each metal type with the right method. And buy quality metals to begin with. Your jewellery will last longer for it.
Your pieces are made to live in. They just need a little help getting there.
